Blocking Spam Emails with WhatSpam

Activating Your Email Account in WhatSpam

To enable WhatSpam to filter spam from your email, you need to first connect an email account.

Follow these steps:

1. Open the WhatSpam app.

2. Navigate to Emails and then proceed to Add account

3. If your email account is Outlook, Hotmail, Live, or MSN, select Sign in with a Microsoft account since these are managed by Microsoft.

4. In the account setup window, enter your email address and password and select which folder you'd like WhatSpam to remove found spam to.

For Other Email Providers (and Google, for now)

If you’re using a different email provider, you’ll need to know your IMAP server settings. For example, if you use Gmail , the IMAP server address is imap.gmail.com and the port number is 993. You can find your provider’s IMAP settings by searching online.

1. During setup, enter your email address and the appropriate IMAP server settings.

2. When prompted, select the folder for incoming spam — usually named Junk or Spam. But you can also select any of the found custom folders you might've created yourself.

Using WhatSpam for Gmail

We're working on one-click authentication for Google. In the meantime, Google requires an app-specific password for third-party applications like WhatSpam. Here’s how to set it up:

1. Enable two-factor authentication on your Google account if you haven’t already.

2. Go to your Google account settings and navigate to Security and then App passwords or use the search in https://myaccount.google.com/ to find App Passwords more easily.

3. Generate a new app-specific password to use with WhatSpam and copy it into the password field.

Using WhatSpam for multiple Email accounts

With a Pro subscription, you can apply WhatSpam’s spam filter to up to five different email accounts. To switch between accounts:

1. Navigate to Emails in the WhatSpam app.

2. You'll be first presented with a list of all the accounts you have connected

3. Select the account you wish to access from the list and proceed to view the contents of its Inbox or chosen Spam folder.

Still Receiving Spam Emails?

While WhatSpam continually improves its spam filtering with advanced artificial intelligence, some spam may still get through due to spammers frequently changing their email- and IP addresses. Here’s what you can do:

  • Report newly found Spam Emails: If you receive spam email, Block the sender in the WhatSpam app. This helps enhance the spam filter for all users.

  • Verify Spam Folder Settings: Ensure you’ve selected the correct folder for incoming spam:

  • Use Advanced Settings to strengthen the filters and rules used to catch the spam in your inbox.
